Bhastrika Pranayama (bellows breath)

 

Introduction:

Bhastrika Pranayama is a breathing practices which helps to burn up toxins in the body and removes diseases and disorders within the three doshas, or constitutions of the body. These doshas include kapha (phlegm), pitta (bile), and vata (wind).

This Pranayama is considered to be a stimulating pranayama that helps to revitalize the body and mind. Because of the rapid exchange of air in the lungs, there is higher rate of exchange between oxygen which enters the body and the carbon dioxide that exists. Ultimately this helps to increase metabolic rate and also helps to heat the body in times of lethargie or laziness.

Spiritually Bhastrika brings balance an strength to the nervous system which help in creating a sense of peace, relaxation, and tranquility. It is a great preparatory practice for meditation as it helps to focus the mind.

Precautions and Aversions:

If you feel any sensation of lightheadedness or faintness during the pranayama you must cease the practice immediately. Chances are you are not doing the practice correctly. Avoid any type of violent breathing and also try to avoid over stressing the facial muscles.

If you suffer from high blood pressure, heart disease, hernia, gastric ulcer, stroke, epilepsy or vertigo you should not practice this pranayama until consulting a doctor or therapeutic specialist.
